On one of my many trips to my favourite kind of place, a stationery store (in any city, it is always a must), I picked up a set of dual-nib markers and set myself a challenge. A black canvas is perhaps the hardest ground to work on. It soaks up every colour you give it, and its rough surface is unkind to ordinary ink. It took a while, and many pens, before I settled on a five-colour set of fluorescent dual-nib markers. The black pulls every colour into itself, and the rough weave resists ordinary ink. So each layer of fluorescent dual-nib marker was built up slowly, one dot at a time. When the tide moves out, it leaves bare what the water usually keeps hidden: the flora beneath the surface, bubbles and reeds, and the most exquisite colours rising from the ocean floor.
