Have YOU noticed the “SWIRL”?

Have YOU noticed the “SWIRL”?

So, last weekend, an old friend came to the studio for the first time...…she had recently been to a Turkish cafe in town, where the walls are adorned in round tiles with printed art.. pretty, colourful and fun.. She shows me pictures and says.. “A bit like what you do?” ..I look at it and say...”that looks like Mandala.. It’s symmetrical, proportionate, exact, whereas my work is quite imperfect”... she looks again and shoots out her brutally honest opinion, which I have come to value over the years, and says “... but I LIKE your imperfect, more!”

And that really sums up my work.. free-flowing, imperfect, unique, heartfelt, relatable!

I don’t know when it dawned upon me that I have this creative side.. Was unspoken and undefined but always in the background of whatever I did, even during my three decades in finance. From the morning chit-chats I published out to clients to unique events I conceptualised to pique their interest, I believe it was all creative and artful.

But, more about all that in subsequent blogs..

Today, I really wanted to talk about the “SWIRL”... a motif that you will start to notice across most of my artwork… also our Instagram, packaging, invoices, bags, etc… In Turquoise, Sand, Black… our brand colours…

When did it creep into my subconscious as my go-to pattern? I can’t remember.. When our team started this journey almost a year back, looking at all my art and creations of over 500 pieces, they started highlighting the “SWIRL” as something that just sat in a corner or background or peppered the piece… It's only THEN that I started to take notice of this beautiful pattern that lives in ocean waves, tendrils of leaves, petals in flowers, some of my FAVORITE pieces of jewellery, my clothes… the Swirl has always been in my life… hidden in plain sight…

Featuring: The Swirl, at the Cloud Forest in Gardens By The Bay.

It finds me now.. wherever I go, motivating and inspiring me…

Tell me when YOU spot one for yourself, and the context in which you do…

Life may be chaotic… there’s always time for a bit of creativity..

Till the next time,

Preetie
