Sizing and hanging a Tangled Monk piece

There are 23 distinct sizes across the 48 wall pieces that leave the Tangled Monk studio in Joo Chiat, which sounds like a lot until you are standing in front of a wall trying to choose. In practice the wall decides, and there are four shapes to know. This is the practical side of buying handmade ceramic wall art.

The square — 28 x 28 cm

The most common format by a distance: fourteen pieces, drawn from A Language of Blue, The Ethereal Quartet, Tangled Blessings and one standalone work. A single medallion suits a narrow wall, a hallway, the space beside a door. Four of them hung as a block with a 3 cm gap occupy 59 cm square; hung in a line, 121 cm. If you are buying one and might buy more later, leave yourself the room.

The mid-size square — 34 x 34 cm and up

Eight pieces are 34 x 34 cm, mostly on handmade paper. Above that the range moves to 44 x 36 cm and 45 x 50 cm. These want to be the only thing on their wall, or the anchor with smaller work around them.

The long horizontal

Two ceramic panels run 51 x 27 cm and 67 x 26 cm, and the seven Rhythm in Six pieces sit around 50 to 55 cm wide by 21 cm tall. A horizontal reads better above a console, a bedhead or a sideboard than a square does — it follows the line of the furniture instead of fighting it.

The large canvas

50 x 42 cm and 78 x 62 cm. These need a clear wall and, more importantly, a wall without direct sun: sunlight fades ink over time, and no amount of care undoes that. If one is hung, check the hook and wire from time to time so they do not mark the canvas.

Everything is framed before it leaves the studio, so the measurement that matters is the outside of the frame, not the drawing. All of it has been drawn by hand at Tangled Monk Pte. Ltd. since the studio opened in 2025.
